Redknapp not expecting Barton return

Harry Redknapp has said he does not think there will be a QPR fire sale in the summer, but is not expecting midfielder Joey Barton to come back.

Harry Redknapp's QPR side are staring relegation in the face
Redknapp wants to keep Remy and Cesar

The Loftus Road boss said he feels the club - on the verge of relegation - are well-equipped to bounce straight back but believed Barton would want to stay at Marseille, where he has been on loan since the summer.

“Joey has done well. He’s had a great season for them,” he said. “He’s a good player but, if you saw where Joey lived in Marseille, I think it would be very difficult to get him back.

“I’m not saying I don’t want Joey back. He belongs to the club. If he has to come back, he has to come back. If it doesn’t work out, then he has to come back - and he’ll be a good player here.”

Redknapp said he was confident that Rangers could retain the players they wanted to keep, despite their almost certain relegation.

“We’ll only let people go who we want to let go,” he said. “The ones we want to keep, we’ll keep them.

“The silly thing about this game is that the ones you want to keep are the ones that want to go. The ones you would like to let go don’t want to go.”

The players Redknapp is keenest to retain are striker Loic Remy and goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

“He’s done great,” the manager said of Remy. “He’s a player I think could score 20 Premier League goals in a season.

“He’s come here and played a handful of games, and he is our leading goalscorer. That [keeping him] will be difficult. We’d like to keep him, obviously, but we have to sit down and see what his plans are.”

Despite speculation, Redknapp said there had not yet been any bids for Cesar, and added that he had no problem with pictures that emerged of the Brazil international wearing a Chelsea shirt at a party.

“It’s a bit of fun,” he said. “He’s round his mate’s house. He’s put a wig on and put a Chelsea kit on. It’s just a bit of fun.”

Finally, Redknapp - who stressed that he had no regrets about taking the QPR job - said he did not yet know how much money he would have to spend in the summer.

“I wouldn’t be asking the owners to spend a sizeable amount. I just feel there are players available if you want to pick them up cheap,” he said.

“I picked up a couple on deadline day - Andros Townsend, Jermaine Jenas. There are players out there. You don’t have to spend fortunes.

“You’re thinking about next year and getting a team that can get us back to the Premier League, where we want to be. That’s really key.

“It won’t be easy to come back up. Have a look at that division. It’s full of quality football clubs. It’s a lot of hard work. There are a lot of excellent teams.

“Of course [I’ve got the heart for it]. It’s going to be a big challenge, but it’s a good club.”
