PSV Eindhoven's Andres Guardado sidelined for 'a number of weeks'

PSV Eindhoven midfielder Andres Guardado will be "unavailable for at least a number of weeks" after sustaining an ankle injury during Tuesday's 2-1 Champions League victory over Manchester United.

The Mexico team captain, 28, is now a doubt for the CONCACAF Cup playoff against the United States on Oct. 10 after being forced to come off in the second half following a foul from United defender Chris Smailling.

PSV confirmed in a statement Guardado is set for a spell on the sidelines, but added that they will not know the extent of the injury until he undergoes a second round of tests.

"Andres Guardado faces a spell on the sidelines due to an ankle injury. The midfielder has damaged his ankle ligaments and will be unavailable for at least a number of weeks," the statement read.

"Guardado underwent an MRI scan immediately after the game, which revealed a severe swelling. The Mexico international will go for a second scan once the swelling has disappeared. Those further tests will determine how long Guardado will be out of action exactly."

Mexico and the United States meet on Oct. 10 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, in a single game playoff to determine CONCACAF's representative to the 2017 Confederations Cup.
