Jackett targets immediate return to Championship

Kenny Jackett insists he's intent on taking Wolves back to the Championship at the first attempt after being unveiled today as the club's first head coach.

Successive relegations have plunged Molineux into crisis but the 51-year-old former Welsh international's CV shows a promotion out of League One with Millwall and a climb from League Two with Swansea.

And he refused to duck away from fans' expectations as he aims to succeed where Terry Connor, Stale Solbakken and Dean Saunders have failed miserably.

"This is the biggest opportunity I've had in terms of size and potential of the club," he said. "Wolves in this division will mean big games for everyone but let's embrace it, not be frightened of it.

"Our aim is to get promotion. Will that be easy? No. But promotion is our target definitely - we want to get up this season.

"Some positive momentum can take this club a long way."

Jackett, who will work in the head coach role successfully adopted by neighbours West Brom, has no plans to appoint assistants, although Saunders' sacking at the end of the season was accompanied by the departure of his No.2 Brian Carey.

Instead, he will assess both his backroom team after the players' return to training on June 24 and an expensive, misfiring playing staff that will need substantial pruning.

"I am here on my own and my remit is to assess the staff and then make recommendations," he added. "Me bringing in three or four people is not necessary."

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey revealed that Jackett was on a rolling one-year contract and, at the start of a week in which Chelsea are due to reappoint Jose Mourinho, introduced him as Wolves' Special One.

The club have now had five managers in less than 16 months but Mick McCarthy was in place for almost six years prior to that.
