Remy blames missing Euro 2012 for form

Ian Holyman, France Correspondent

Loic Remy believes the trauma of missing out on Euro 2012 is "the biggest reason" for the nightmarish end to his year at Marseille.

Remy, 25, contributed two goals in seven appearances en route to the finals in Poland and Ukraine, but suffered a thigh injury in OM's penultimate Ligue 1 outing. He consequently missed out on the final cut for Laurent Blanc's squad, which proved the start of a downward spiral for the promising forward.

"The biggest reason for the tricky end to 2012, the start of it all, was that I didn't go to the Euro after my injury," Remy told OM's official website. "I'd played virtually every qualifier. To learn that I wasn't going when I'd contributed to the qualification was really a big blow to my morale, and it's from then on that things turned against me. It's a period in which I've had a lot of bad things happen, but I know my form will return, of course."

Both Remy and OM will be hoping that is the case come 2013. A series of niggling injuries have limited him to just two league starts and a single goal since the start of the season, sparking speculation OM would be keen to offload him in January. Newcastle United reportedly lead the chase for his services, but both OM coach Elie Baup and president Vincent Labrune have recently declared the club's finances are sufficiently healthy for them not to need to cash in on Remy.

The pacy striker has also recently been given public backing by team-mate Andre-Pierre Gignac, himself a target for widescale criticism last season before returning to form in the current campaign.

"When he was going through a tough spell and media were on top of him, he really suffered," Remy said. "He's been through it, but managed to come out the other side; he must know what I'm going through.

"It was nice of him, but it's up to me, and I have to show all those who have said I'm finished that I'm not. I'm not worried, the past is the past. I know what I'll do, and where I want to go. I simply have to give myself the means to get there."
