Chilean football season ended early amid protests

Universidad Catolica retained the league title following the season's early finish.

The Chilean football season has been ended early following a meeting of the Council of Presidents of Chilean professional football clubs on Friday.

The decision was taken due to fears about security in the country, following anti-government protests over inequality which have been taking place for six weeks.

It's the first time in its 86-year history that Chile's professional leagues have not been complete, as football continued to be played even with the 1973 Chilean coup d'état.

A statement...

Do you want fries with that? Club's unique shirt numbers cause a stir

O'Higgins midfielder Ramon Fernandez appears to have a chip on his shoulder.

With the 2019 Chilean league season kicking off over the weekend, O'Higgins were able to debut their mouthwatering new away kit.

While the pink shirt itself immediately caught the eye, the numbers on the back caused something of a stir among fans.

As part of O'Higgins' sponsorship deal with McDonald's, the numbers on the back have been designed to look like french fries dipped in ketchup.

Corporate shill, and almost entirely illegible from a distance of more than a few feet away? The perfect combination.

Footballer celebrates goal by proposing to girlfriend, gets booked

We've certainly seen some lavish goal celebrations over the years, right from the donning of smuggled superhero masks through to elaborate ensemble dance routines.

However, Antofagasta midfielder Eduard Bello upped the ante after finding the net during his side's Chilean league match against Everton on Sunday afternoon.

Bello took just two minutes to open the scoring for the away side and celebrated by running up into the stands, getting down on one knee and proposing to his girlfriend, beach volleyball...

Sebastian Abreu throws table at fans after insults in Chilean league game

Botafogo's Roberto Fernandez, left, fights for the ball with Audax Italiano's Sebastian Abreu
Sebastian Abreu, right, has made nine appearances since he joined Audax Italiano in December.

Audax Italiano striker Sebastian Abreu lost his temper and threw a table at his club's fans after a goalless draw against Antofagasta in Chile's top flight on Sunday.

The former Uruguay international, who came on as a substitute in the 22nd minute, was upset that some fans insulted him after the final whistle.

Abreu picked up a table that was on the field and threw it toward the stands, though it fell short and crashed to the ground.

Nicknamed "El Loco," or "The Madman," Abreu, who will likely face...

'Outrageous' dive by Chilean player set to lead to punishment

Universidad de Concepcion's Jean Meneses, left, will face a sports tribunal for a dive.

A Chilean player is likely to face punishment after a blatant, self-confessed dive led to a match-winning penalty for his team.

Jean Meneses, a striker for Universidad de Concepcion, exaggerated his fall in the 84th minute of his team's 2-1 win over Colo Colo in the Chilean Primera Division on Sunday.

The head of Chile's refereeing commission, Enrique Osses, said referee Hector Jona made a mistake for awarding a penalty and for not punishing Meneses for the dive.

Meneses has been called to testify...
