Uruguay legend Alvaro 'El Chino ' Recoba bids farewell to football

Alvaro Recoba's farewell match
Alvaro Recoba received a standing ovation at his farewell match at the Gran Parque Central stadium in Montevideo .

"One last magic act." That's how El Pais, Uruguay's biggest newspaper, chose to headline their preview of Alvaro Recoba's farewell match, which took place on Thursday night in the Gran Parque Central, a stadium he knew so well and lit up so frequently during his playing days with Nacional. Recoba debuted for Danubio back in 1994, but enjoyed his first successes -- and his most recent ones too -- with Nacional, where he became a club idol.

Uruguayan league mocked in brilliant UEFA Champions League parody

With tongues firmly pressed in cheeks, Uruguayan broadcasters TV TCC chose to promote their coverage of the new football season with a brilliant parody of the bombastic pomp that accompanies the UEFA Champions League.

Manager Willy Sagnol confirmed earlier this week that Paris Saint-Germain's...

The international media rights giant's chief has revealed a project for a 64-team competition to mirror the UEFA Champions League's format, which could fetch an estimated $500 million in television and marketing rights -- quintupling the current annual take-ins for the CONCACAF Champions League and CONMEBOL's Copa Libertadores...

Diego Forlan says Porto a step back for Iker Casillas

Iker Casillas' Real Madrid exit and his signing with Porto was "a step back for Iker," said Uruguay striker Diego Forlan in his weekly column in The National.

"I have huge respect for Porto, another great club who consistently challenge for titles," Forlan wrote, adding that it was a tough decision for Real Madrid. "They identify players, develop them and then sell them on for a profit, but let's not pretend they're Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in the world. It's a step down for Casillas,...
