The Portuguese champions released a statement to the Lisbon stock exchange announcing that the club had reached an agreement with the 41-year-old over his departure, while the Dragons announced on their website that B-team coach Luis Castro will take over as interim manager.

Fonseca took over at Estadio do Dragao in July 2013 and won the Portuguese Supercup against Guimaraes at the start of the season, but recent results have caused the club to take action.

Porto’s 1-0 defeat to Estoril last week was the club’s first home loss in over five years, and coincides with a four-game winless streak -- the worst run for nearly a decade.

The Portuguese giants -- Liga champions in eight of the last 10 seasons -- lie nine points behind league leaders and fierce rivals Benfica.

Angry Dragons fans waved white handkerchiefs at Fonseca during the Estoril defeat, and despite progressing to the last-16 of the Europa League against Napoli following a stunning late comeback at Eintracht Frankfurt two weeks ago, a 2-2 draw at Guimaraes on Sunday sealed his fate.
