Jackson Martinez releases album of religious, hip-hop inspired songs

There was a time when Colombian striker Jackson Martinez commanded two €35million-plus transfer fees in the space of six months.

Unfortunately, after scoring a deluge of goals in three seasons at Porto, various injuries conspired to hamper subsequent stints at both Atletico Madrid and Guangzhou Evergrande, with the goals and the appearances gradually slowing to a trickle.

Earlier this week, Martinez surprised many by agreeing to move back to Portugal, signing for Primeira Liga bottom club...

Jackson Martinez joins Portimonense on loan from Guanzghou Evergrande

Jackson Martinez has returned to Europe after signing a season-long loan deal with Portimonense who currently sit bottom of the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Martinez is still officially contracted to Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande, but has not played an official match since 2016. The former Porto striker insisted he would show "maximum dedication and commitment" and claimed he would be "wrong to think about scoring before a match," during his unveiling.

However, he took a more philosophical...

Benfica to fight corruption charges that could lead to competition ban

Benfica says it will fight corruption charges that could lead to the Portuguese football club being banned from competition.

The Lisbon attorney general's office says it is charging Benfica in connection with alleged attempts to gain access to magistrates' investigations involving the club or their league rivals.

Apart from the club, the public prosecutor is also charging two court clerks.

A judge must now decide if the public prosecutor's evidence is enough to take the case to trial.

A verdict could...

VAR review in La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and MLS this season

Gab Marcotti speaks to Alexis Nunes about the proposed introduction of VAR in the Champions League and how it will be used.

The video assistant referee (VAR) was heralded as a major success at the World Cup finals this summer, and now it has been introduced fully in almost every top European League. Only the Premier League is stalling over its introduction, while UEFA is considering implementing it from the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

But how is VAR getting on in La Liga, the Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Primeira Liga -- as well as Major League Soccer, where it's been in use since...

Fabio Coentrao takes pay cut to leave Real Madrid: 'I don't mind dying poor'

Fabio Coentrao during the first leg of Sporting Lisbon's Europa League quarterfinal against Atletico Madrid.
Fabio Coentrao was loaned to Sporting Lisbon last season and has rejoined boyhood club Rio Ave.

Fabio Coentrao said the reason he agreed to cancel his contract at Real Madrid with a year left was because he wanted to be happy.

Coentrao signed for Madrid in 2011 after leaving Benfica, and after being sent on loan to Sporting Lisbon last season, he had hoped to be able to return on a permanent deal.

Instead, the left-back rejoined boyhood club Rio Ave on Friday ahead of the transfer deadline.

"I waited until the 31st for a call from [Sporting], to which I gave everything I had last year, and...
