UEFA fines Portugal €5,000 for fan running on pitch

UEFA has fined Portugal €5,000 after one of their fans ran onto the pitch towards Cristiano Ronaldo during the Euro 2016 quarterfinal against Poland on Thursday.

The man, wearing a shirt in Portugal colors, evaded security to get close to Ronaldo during extra time of the match in Marseille.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel imposed the standard fine for a "field invasion," plus a warning over fans encroaching onto the playing area after Portugal won in a penalty shootout.

A similar case was dropped earlier in the European Championship after a fan ran on the field to take a photograph with Ronaldo after a game against Austria at Parc des Princes in Paris.

UEFA says it also fined the Portuguese federation €2,000 for fans lighting fireworks in Stade Velodrome at Marseille.
