Portugal release Cristiano Ronaldo with Euro qualification set

Cristiano Ronaldo has been released from international duty after Portugal qualified for Euro 2016 on Thursday.

A 1-0 win at Denmark sealed Portugal's place in France next summer, and Ronaldo has been spared the trip to Serbia for the final qualifier on Sunday, as have midfielder Tiago and centre-back Ricardo Carvalho.

Fabio Coentrao was also discharged after picking up an unspecified injury against Denmark.

Portugal manager Fernando Santos called up two uncapped wingers to take their place, Ricardo Pereira of Nice and Braga's Rui Fonte.

Santos said in his postmatch news conference that the veteran players were allowed to return to their clubs immediately.

"I had been thinking before that if we won today, we would make changes for the next game, because we recognise that, at this point in time, it would be a little tiring for some of the players," Santos said.

"I want to see and work with other players, so Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiago and Ricardo Carvalho have been released from the squad."
