Timbers add Samuel Armenteros on loan from Benevento

The Portland Timbers signed forward Samuel Armenteros on loan from Serie A side Benevento on Friday.

The MLS club also has an option to buy the 27-year-old on a permanent basis at the end of the seaosn.

Armenteros, a Sweden international, has played most of his career in the Dutch Eredivisie, and after scoring 22 goals in 32 games for Heracles last season, he moved to newly promoted Benevento this summer.

He has made nine appearances in Serie A this year and scored against Sassuolo in November.

"Samuel Armenteros has a proven track record of scoring goals, and we will look for him to help bolster our attacking corps for the 2018 MLS season," Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson said.

"It was a priority of ours to bring in another attacker who can help influence games for us. As we looked to strengthen our group this season, we believe that Samuel has the proper mindset and characteristics to have a positive impact with this club."

The Timbers will use targeted allocation money to sign Armenteros, who joins a front line that already features Fanendo Adi, and helps fill the void left by the departure of Darren Mattocks.
