Silvestre signs for Portland Timbers
Former Manchester United and Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre has signed with MLS club Portland Timbers on a reported two-year deal.
Silvestre, 35, was released by German club Werder Bremen at the end of the 2011-12 season and has been maintaining his fitness by training with United. The ex-France international also spent time on trial with the Timbers, and the Seattle Sounders, in a bid to win a contract which was announced via Twitter.
Timbers owner Merritt Paulson posted on Tuesday night: “Barring visa hiccups, we've signed M. Silvestre. Will provide terrific leadership & had great chemistry w players/coaches during stay with us.
“Welcome to the Rose City, @IamMSilvestre! We look forward to getting you and your family here soon.”
Silvestre won five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one Champions League trophy during his ten-year spell at Old Trafford.
