When you type the name of Thiago Silva into an internet search engine, the merits of a Brazilian mixed martial arts performer of the same name appears at the top of the list. However, this Thiago Silva is much more cultured than his more violent namesake.
Having started out as a more attacking talent, Silva has dropped back into a defensive role in his professional career, making his mark in European football with AC Milan this season after joining the club last summer. He certainly seems to have grown into his role working alongside the always consistent and highly experienced Alessandro Nesta.
Silva played as an overage player for the 2008 Olympic side that was coached by Dunga and the national team legend has stuck by his man during his time as senior boss. He may have only played in two 2010 World Cup qualifiers, but Silva has a decent chance of seeing some action in South Africa after a good season at club level and an impressive display in a friendly international against England at the back end of 2009.
