Jupp Heynckes hails Javi Martinez after restoring him to midfield

Bayern Munich are through to the Champions League knockout phase after beating Celtic via a Javi Martinez header.
Bayern Munich are through to the Champions League knockout phase after beating Celtic via a Javi Martinez header.

GLASGOW -- Jupp Heynckes hailed the contribution from Javi Martinez as Bayern Munich reached the Champions League knockout stages for the 10th consecutive season, seeing off a brave challenge from Celtic 2-1 in Glasgow.

France international Kingsley Coman put the German champions ahead midway through the first half, rounding keeper Craig Gordon but with a suspicion of handball.

Roared on by their passionate home following at Celtic Park, the home side gave as good as they got and it was no surprise...

Javi Martinez key to Jupp Heynckes' plans to fix Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich's attack fired on all cylinders with a thrashing of Freiburg in Jupp Heynckes' first game returning as coach.

Bayern Munich head into Wednesday night's Champions League match against Celtic without the injured Manuel Neuer, Frank Ribery and Juan Bernat. On top of that, the most important player in Jupp Heynckes' system is missing too: Javi Martinez can't play due a shoulder injury.

To understand the 29-year-old's relevance we have to go back five years. It's easily forgotten now that Heynckes very nearly lost his job after finishing as runners-up in all three competitions in 2011-12, including a chaotic...

Bayern Munich ace Javi Martinez scores stunning goals in training

With Freiburg scheduled to visit the Allianz Arena this weekend, Bayern Munich descended upon their training complex to begin their prematch preparations.

In between all the usual fitness drills, Javi Martinez found a pocket of free time to rattle off not one, but two "impossible" trick-shot goals in quick succession.

1 o 2?? Which one is better?

Bayern Munich defender Javi Martinez has broken his collarbone hiking in the mountains and will miss the Bundesliga champions' final two games of the season.

Bayern announced on their official website "the 28-year-old broke his left collarbone on Sunday while hiking in the mountains while at home in Spain."

Martinez returned to Munich after the incident and underwent surgery on Tuesday.

Martinez and Coman limp off as Bayern Munich stumble to draw at Leverkusen

Kingsley Coman, right, limped off in Bayern Munich's 0-0 draw at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Lacklustre Bayern Munich dropped points for a second consecutive away Bundesliga game, playing out a goalless draw against 10-man Bayer Leverkusen.

An experimental Bayern starting XI, featuring five changes from their midweek Champions League defeat against Real Madrid, failed to take their chances against the relegation-threatened home side, who had Tin Jedvaj sent off on the hour mark.

Unlike in Berlin, Freiburg and Ingolstadt in 2017, Bayern didn't have to rely on any last-gasp goals to eke out some extra points. Buoyant Bayern have scored 20 goals in their last five...
