PSG can move into first in Ligue 1 if they handle Montpellier this time

PARIS -- Paris Saint-Germain can hit top spot in Ligue 1 for the first time this season if they dispose of Montpellier at Parc des Princes on Saturday. With league leaders AS Monaco not in action until Sunday night away at Lyon, the French champions can go a provisional three points clear of their principality rivals.

However, if PSG are to do that, they will need to put in a more convincing performance than they did in the 3-2 win away at Metz on Tuesday. Had Blaise Matuidi not popped up with a...

Stephane Sessegnon signs with Montpellier after links to Burnley

Stephane Sessegnon was a menace to the Stoke defence all afternoon long.
Stephane Sessegnon spent five years in England but now returns to Ligue 1.

Montpellier signed free agent midfielder Stephane Sessegnon to a two-year contract on Tuesday.

Sessegnon, 32, had been linked to a move to Burnley, but instead returns to Ligue 1 for the first time since he left Paris Saint-Germain in 2011.

The Benin international played with PSG for three seasons before joining Sunderland, and after two years...

From Robson-Kanu to Klose: The top 10 free agents in football

1. Hal Robson-Kanu, 27, striker

In the aftermath of Wales' Euro 2016 semifinal loss to Portugal, Robson-Kanu admitted that his performances in France had increased the demand for his services. He said he had received offers from "the Premier League and the rest of the world," though intimated a preference to stay in England after running down his contract with Reading.

Moments like his winning goal against Slovakia, and the Cruyff turn with which he bamboozled Belgium's defenders, have made...

West Brom's Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe are released

Stephane Sessegnon was a menace to the Stoke defence all afternoon long.
Stephane Sessegnon made 92 appearances for the Baggies.

Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe will not be offered new deals by West Bromwich Albion and are to leave the club.

However, Albion remain in talks with James Morrison about extending his stay at The Hawthorns.

Midfielder Sessegnon made 92 appearances for the Baggies, scoring eight goals, after arriving at the club from Sunderland in 2013.

Anichebe announced on Twitter earlier this week that he would be leaving.

West Brom trio is key to Pulis' hopes of another season in the Premier League

Stephane Sessegnon's surprise return to the side was the catalyst for West Brom's 1-0 win over Sunderland at The Hawthorns, their first home victory this season.

Although James Morrison was a doubt for the game, it was still a big surprise to see Sessegnon chosen by Pulis to replace the Scotland International in the West Brom midfield. He hadn't started a Premier League game for Albion this season and it appeared as if he was being frozen out before being allowed to leave in January.

He is perhaps...

West Brom hope history repeats vs. Sunderland

Alan Irvine will be hoping to replicate the success of his predecessors against Sunderland, as he looks to get his West Brom's career off to a winning start at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

History is not on Irvine's side in terms of West Brom's success on the opening day of the Premier League season -- having only won once in all their opening day fixtures -- but the Baggies do have a fantastic record against Sunderland, particularly in home fixtures.

Albion have won their last five home fixtures against...
