Aston Villa sign midfielder Glenn Whelan from Stoke City

Glenn Whelan is one of several Stoke City veterans who have been part of the team's transformation from brawny and big to slick and savvy.
Glenn Whelan spent nine years on the books with Stoke City.

Aston Villa have signed Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan in a deal that could rise to £2 million.

Whelan, 33, has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at Villa Park, bringing to an end his nine-year association with the Premier League side.

"I have enjoyed happy times at Stoke City but now is the time for a new football adventure -- and what a club to join in Aston Villa," Whelan told Villa's official club website.

"We may be in the Championship but everything about this club screams Premier...

Mark Hughes job not in jeopardy at Stoke; Whelan could leave

Glenn Whelan is one of several Stoke City veterans who have been part of the team's transformation from brawny and big to slick and savvy.
Glenn Whelan's time at Stoke could be up.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes' position is not under threat despite another disappointing end to the season, but veteran midfielder Glenn Whelan's nine-year stay may be coming to an end.

Hughes' side won just two of their last 11 matches -- mirroring an end-of-season slump in 2016 when they registered just one victory in their final 10 games -- against a backdrop of growing fans' frustration.

However, chairman Peter Coates insists the Welshman's job is not in jeopardy, despite the club finishing outside...

Same old story for Stoke as Darren Fletcher joins on a free transfer

Darren Fletcher could be a savvy addition for Stoke City, but at 33, he won't add any needed youth to the roster.

In February, Stoke fans read the first of many newspaper reports suggesting the club were due to undergo significant surgery in the summer in order to lower the average age of the squad following a season of disappointment.

The story added: "[Stoke manager Mark] Hughes has the support of the Stoke hierarchy and remains on course for a top-10 finish, but there is a realisation at board level that the squad needs younger, more dynamic players."

It was music to the ears of supporters who had...

Stoke need reinforcements virtually everywhere after miserable campaign

Mark Hughes and Stoke City had virtually nothing to celebrate this season.

A disappointing season, which picked up where the previous one ended, completed 18 months of misery under an increasingly floundering Mark Hughes.

Rating out of 10: 2

Sadly, there has been very little to celebrate this season, making it nigh on impossible to pick even a solitary highlight from it. The manager himself was asked the same question, and his response was to champion draws against Manchester United and Manchester City, which gives a telling indication of just how underwhelming...

Jon Walters, Stoke a step behind throughout in predictable setback at Leicester

Another game on the road and another predictable loss for Stoke, who added to their long list of poor performances with a 2-0 defeat to resurgent Leicester. The writing was on the wall soon after kickoff with the Potters second to everything and a yard behind their hosts all over the pitch; who duly took advantage.

The opening goal was perhaps overdue and came because of a succession of individual errors that conspired to tee up Wilfred Ndidi for a goal-of-the-season contender, with more comical...

Stoke's Mark Hughes plays down Joe Allen-Glenn Whelan clash

Mark Hughes was unconcerned when Stoke teammates Joe Allen and Glenn Whelan clashed during the international break having seen far worse in the confines of a training ground.

Wales' ill-tempered trip to the Republic of Ireland last week saw a number of incidents, none more horrifying than the broken leg Seamus Coleman suffered from a Neil Taylor tackle, and two of Hughes' club players were involved in another flashpoint when Whelan's forearm struck Allen.
