Greek court hands Avraam Papadopoulos suspended jail sentence

Brisbane A-League defender Avraam Papadopoulos has been handed a suspended two-and-a-half year jail sentence by a Greek court for illegally betting on matches.

Agence France-Presse reports Papadopoulos was one of 58 people punished by the three-member Court of Appeal in Athens for their roles in the "Koriopolis" match-fixing scandal in 2011.

The 33-year-old spent seven seasons with Greek Super League club Olympiakos, at times serving as captain, and signed an A-League deal last year with the Roar.

Brisbane Roar's Avraam Papadopoulos has been given a seven-match ban by the A-League judiciary for spitting on Sydney FC's Matt Simon two weeks ago.

The defender's ban includes the one match he has already served, when he sat out the Roar's 2-0 win over Western Sydney.

In a statement, the club said it would look at a possible appeal based on the amount of time it took for the verdict to come down.

The Roar's match against Sydney FC was on Nov. 25.

Melbourne-born Greek international Avraam Papadopoulos has laughed off the match-fixing allegations that have followed him to the A-League, dismissing them as completely untrue.
