Hertha Berlin goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann has been called up to the United States squad for the forthcoming friendlies against England and Italy after goalkeeper Zack Steffen and midfielder Darlington Nagbe withdrew from the team with injuries.

Jonathan Klinsmann in potential United States, Germany tug-of-war after training camp invite

Jurgen Klinsmann's son Jonathan has been invited to a Germany goalkeeper camp, setting up a potential battle with the United States for his international registration.

The U.S. under-20 international holds both German and American citizenship, but has yet to receive a senior call up to either national side.

"It's an honour for him," ex-USMNT coach Klinsmann said.

Jonathan Klinsmann improved after 'Too American' critique - Hertha coach

Hertha Berlin goalkeeping coach Zsolt Petry has praised Jonathan Klinsmann four months after criticising the player's work ethic.

In March, Petry blasted the United States youth international -- son of former Germany captain and U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann -- for being "too American" and lacking work ethic.

However, Petry told reporters that the 21-year-old, who is under contract until 2019, has improved his position at the club after accepting the criticism and working on his weaknesses.

But Jarstein, 33, backed the U.S. youth international and said he was still learning.

"He's a good lad, who has taken a good development path," Norway...

Hertha Berlin coach Pal Dardai and sporting director Michael Preetz backed Jonathan Klinsmann on Thursday after the U.S. youth international was criticised by the club's goalkeeping coach Zsolt Petry.

Earlier this week, Petry said Klinsmann -- the son of former Germany captain and U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann -- needed to improve his work ethic and claimed there was "too much American" in him.

His comments prompted speculation in Germany that Klinsmann could be on his way out of Hertha just...

'Too much American' in Jonathan Klinsmann - Hertha Berlin assistant

Hertha Berlin's goalkeeping coach has urged U.S. youth international Jonathan Klinsmann to work harder, saying there's "too much American" in the 20-year-old.

Klinsmann, the son of former Germany star and U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann, has made nine appearances for Hertha's under-23 team in the German fourth division and one for the senior team, but he's behind former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Thomas Kraft, 29, and Norway international Rune Jarstein, 33, in the club's pecking order.

And speaking...
