Real's "B squad" players like Theo Hernandez might not make the cut

Hernandez was supposed to be the next great full-back but has struggled mightily in Madrid.

"Batacazo!" screamed the pro-Madrid media on Thursday morning after Real Madrid's B team failed to carve out a result against Sevilla in the Sanchez Pizjuan, losing 3-2. That can be translated in several ways, but "wallop!" is perhaps the most appropriate after another damning piece of evidence that the Bernabeu's transfer policy last summer was fatally flawed.

Madrid pocketed €87.5 million in transfer business but that is a drop in the ocean considering it arguably cost the reigning champions...

Real Madrid's Borja Mayoral intends to leave; 'I'm young and need to play'

Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral told GOL TV he will leave the Bernabeu this summer in search of regular football despite marking a rare start with a goal in a 2-1 win at home against Leganes on Saturday.

Mayoral, a youth product raised near the city, has six goals in 22 appearances across all competitions this term, but the majority of his playing time came when coach Zinedine Zidane rested his biggest names for the Copa del Rey.

Zidane rotated heavily again against Leganes, thinking of the second...

Lucas Vazquez gets 8/10 with strong all-round play against Numancia

Real Madrid effectively sealed their place in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey with a 3-0 defeat of a spirited Numancia in Los Pajaritos that was neither pretty nor unaided by a dose of good fortune after the home side lost captain Adrian Ripa to injury after 20 minutes and Pape Diamanka to a red card after an hour. Gareth Bale and Isco struck from the spot before Borja Mayoral embellished the score in stoppage time. Numancia should have had a penalty in the first half and were harshly penalized...

Record-breaking Ronaldo, unsung hero Vazquez lift Real past Dortmund

A late goal from Lucas Vazquez secured victory for Real Madrid in a frenetic clash with Borussia Dortmund. Borja Mayoral clipped the ball over Roman Burki to open the scoring from close range after eight minutes. Cristiano Ronaldo doubled the lead four minutes later with a whipped shot from the edge of the box. Yet the home side unravelled, and two smartly-taken goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang either side of half-time drew Peter Bosz' Bundesliga free-fallers level. With nine minutes remaining,...

Gareth Bale, Borja Mayoral prevent disaster for Real Madrid Bs in Copa

Gareth Bale came on in the 62nd minute and quickly set up both of Real Madrid's goals.

Gareth Bale returned in style to settle a game that Fuenla briefly threatened to win after Luis Milla opened the scoring and veteran chopper Cata Diaz rattled the bar on the hour mark. Borja Mayoral bagged a brace to spare Madrid's blushes in an eventual 2-2 draw, with Alvaro Portillo on target for the visitors late on.

Positives

Bale made an immediate impact and turned the game favourably for Madrid after Zinedine Zidane's side were roundly booed off at half-time. Mateo Kovacic made a confident...

Mayoral proving he can take Morata's place backing up Benzema in Madrid

Speaking before Real Madrid's 3-1 victory in Anoeta, Zinedine Zidane expressed his faith in Karim Benzema's understudy, Borja Mayoral. That faith manifested itself in a first start of the season for the 20-year-old striker and Zidane reaped his reward as Mayoral scored one and forced a second off Sociedad defender Kevin Rodrigues, handing his side a 2-1 lead at the break.

Mayoral might not have been in Zidane's line-up at all but for the late withdrawal of Toni Kroos from the squad, forcing the...
