Leon's struggles could leave Donovan short of chances to achieve Liga MX dream

Landon Donovan
Leon's struggles could mean Landon Donovan's Liga MX dream could become a nightmare.

Since joining Liga MX a month ago, Landon Donovan's Club Leon has won just once in its past seven matches.

To make matters worse, its past three defeats have been absolute routs. Leon has conceded 14 goals and scored just two. Donovan himself has not been particularly privy to the defeats -- the only minutes he's played for his new club came in a 2-1 win over Puebla -- but the hole Los Esmeraldas have dug themselves seems too big for the American legend to fill at this point.

It was more of...

Landon Donovan's Club Leon to face Earthquakes in friendly

As Landon Donovan comes out of retirement again to this time join Leon, relive his top five goals in Major League Soccer.
U.S. and LA Galaxy legend Landon Donovan is presented at Club Leon and addresses his new fans for the first time.

Club Leon claimed on Monday that Landon Donovan will return to the San Jose Earthquakes -- but it's only for a friendly match.

The Mexican club wrote on Twitter: "Landon Donovan will return to his country in March, following interest from San Jose Earthquake of MLS."

But it turned out to only be a bit of marketing, as the Earthquakes soon announced that the teams will play at the Avaya Stadium on March 24.

Donovan began his MLS career with San Jose from 2001-03, while on loan from Bayer Leverkusen,...

Landon Donovan's low-key Leon debut first step of monumental challenge

LEON, Mexico -- It's February 2018 and Landon Donovan has just made his Liga MX debut.

If that occurrence had been predicted by someone one year, two years or even 10 years ago, it would've been laughed at.

And, in truth, even as Donovan lifted his bib over his head and the crowd stood to applaud his imminent entrance onto the pitch in the 83rd minute of Leon's 2-1 win over Puebla in Estadio Leon, the whole situation still felt slightly surreal.

But as Leon's No. 20 started playing the ball around...

Landon Donovan makes his first Leon appearance in win over Puebla

LEON, Mexico -- U.S. legend Landon Donovan made his Leon debut on Saturday, coming off the bench in the 83rd minute in his team's 2-1 Liga MX victory over Puebla.

The 35-year-old was playing his first match since he announced his return to the game in January, following a 14-month period since his last appearance for LA Galaxy on Nov. 6, 2016.

Donovan came on with Leon already 2-1 up and looking to see out the game, with the American's every touch applauded by the home fans.

Landon Donovan returns to a Club Leon in need of a timely boost

With Landon Donovan set to make his debut for Club Leon, Herculez Gomez examines what the American legend is capable of for the Liga MX side.
U.S. and LA Galaxy legend Landon Donovan is presented at Club Leon and addresses his new fans for the first time.

When Club Leon kicks off its home game against Puebla on Saturday, it will have been 26 days since U.S. national team legend Landon Donovan was presented in front of around 7,000 excited fans at Estadio Leon and his retirement was officially undone.

Back then, things were looking pretty positive for La Fiera. Leon had started the Liga MX 2018 Clausura season with the look of a side that was a playoff certainty; it had picked up two authoritative wins in its first two matches. Then the buzz of...

Landon Donovan's debut with Leon could come as early as this weekend, with the former U.S. international ready to travel with the squad to face Monterrey on Saturday if required.

"I'm feeling good, it's the coach's decision if I travel to Monterrey or not, but I'm improving every day and, if it is a possibility, I'll be ready because I want to give something back to the people on the pitch," Donovan told reporters in Leon on Monday.
