England boss Southgate calls up Southampton's Ward-Prowse, Chelsea's Hudson-Odoi

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse and Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi have been called into England's squad for this month's European Championship qualifiers after four players withdrew due to injury.

England manager Gareth Southgate announced a 25-man squad last week but Manchester City's John Stones and Fabian Delph, Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Manchester United's Luke Shaw pulled out.

The 18-year-old Hudson-Odoi was set to join the Under-21 squad in Bristol when he was told he had...

Rooney, Luiz, Sturridge among players fighting for World Cup places

World Cup 2018 is just 10 months away, and that adds an extra dimension to the coming Premier League season. For these Premier League players currently out of favour with their respective national teams, the fight is on to win a place at the World Cup in Russia.

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse ready to take England chance

James Ward-Prowse has impressed for Southampton and the U21s.

James Ward-Prowse says he will use his time with the England squad to improve as a player but the midfielder also insists he is ready to take his chance if it comes this week.

The uncapped Southampton man has been named in Gareth Southgate's squad for the matches against Germany and Lithuania and he is determined to make his mark should he be selected.

"It's obviously an incredibly proud feeling for me," Ward-Prowse told a news conference. "It's always been a lifelong ambition and a career ambition...

Saints stalwart Ward-Prowse gets first senior England call-up thanks to Puel

James Ward-Prowse owes a debt of gratitude to Southampton manager Claude Puel after being named in the England senior squad for the first time on Thursday.

As the club's longest-serving player, Ward-Prowse has seen more than his fair share of chopping and changing in the dugout at the St Mary's Stadium. From Nigel Adkins, who handed him his debut as a 16-year-old, to Mauricio Pochettino, whom he credits as having the biggest influence on his career, and from Ronald Koeman to Puel, the midfielder...

Newcomer Gabbiadini continues blistering start in rout of Sunderland

Manolo Gabbiadini continued his sensational start to his Southampton career by scoring twice in Saturday's 4-0 rout of bottom club Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Saints added a third via a Jason Denayer own goal and substitute Shane Long bagged a fourth late on as the EFL Cup finalists claimed a morale-boosting win ahead of their big Wembley date with Manchester United.

It was only the south coast side's second Premier League win since mid-December.

Long's late goal sees stagnant Southampton past Norwich

Southampton were uninspiring and left it late but grabbed a late winner to advance to the FA Cup fourth round.

Shane Long scored a dramatic stoppage time winner to lead Southampton to a 1-0 FA Cup third round replay win at home against Championship side Norwich.

Long's scrappy 92nd minute effort set up a fourth round clash at home to Arsenal -- but the laboured performance did little to restore the fans' faith in under-pressure manager Claude Puel.
