Gary Cahill, Emerson Palmieri struggle as Chelsea cling to narrow win over Derby

LONDON -- Frank Lampard tasted defeat on his first trip to an adoring Stamford Bridge as a manager, falling 3-2, but not before his vibrant Derby County side gave Chelsea a significant scare in the Carabao Cup fourth round -- with returning loanees Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori both making an impact.

Positives

Chelsea are through, Mount and Tomori got some valuable big-game experience, and Stamford Bridge got to pay tribute to perhaps the club's biggest legend without the night being tainted...

Victor Moses 9/10, Alvaro Morata 5/10 as Chelsea beat Burnley, inch closer to fourth

Chelsea edged out Burnley 2-1 in a highly entertaining game of football at Turf Moor. The Blues always held the upper hand in respect to possession and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 20th minute, Kevin Long putting through his own goal via a Victor Moses cross. The Clarets had no intention of lying down though and battled back to level somewhat fortunately, when Ashley Barnes deflected a speculative shot from Johann Berg Gudmundsson past Thibaut Courtois. The game was won five...

Will Chelsea's Olivier Giroud, Emerson be eligible for Champions League?

Olivier Giroud
Olivier Giroud has signed up for Chelsea.

Chelsea have completed moves for Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud  and AS Roma defender Emerson Palmieri. But will both be able to play in the knockout stages of the Champions League?

To put it simply: YES!

UEFA Champions League regulations allow clubs to register three new players for the knockout rounds.

One of those players can have "been fielded in a UEFA club competition group stage match for another club in the current season" provided that player has not already played "in the...

Chelsea's Emerson Palmieri: 'I'm injury-free and fit to play'

Chelsea signing Emerson Palmieri insisted that he is injury free and ready to contribute immediately after completing a £25 million move from Roma.

The deal to bring Emerson to Stamford Bridge -- worth an initial £17.6m with £7.9m in add-ons -- was announced by both clubs on Tuesday, making him Chelsea's second signing of the January transfer window after Ross Barkley's £15m move from Everton.

Emerson has been signed to provide competition and cover for Marcos Alonso and...

Emerson Palmieri road to Chelsea a study in perseverance and grit

No Chelsea player will understand how far Emerson Palmieri has come better than Marcos Alonso, the very man he will fight against for a place in the starting lineup on the left flank.

Few would have imagined that Alonso wpuld become such an important star at Stamford Bridge when was struggling to get a game at the beginning of his Bolton career, or sat on the bench for Fiorentina in 2013. Emerson has also had to overcome significant doubts regarding his quality before finally getting an opportunity...

Jury is still out on Chelsea's dealings as the transfer window closes

As the clock ticks through the final hours of the January transfer window, Chelsea will be working feverishly to conclude some key business before the window closes. The club have certainly tried to be active during this period, though it is difficult to know what to make of their efforts just yet.

On the one hand, should the deals for Roma's Emerson Palmieri and Arsenal's Olivier Giroud be completed, Chelsea could look back on the past month with a reasonable degree of satisfaction. The squad has...
