They say you should never go back but Melbourne Victory defender Nick Ansell is hoping for happy returns at his former A-League home.

The centre-back has joined the Victory on a two-year deal after his stint with Portuguese club Tondela was cut short.

Ansell chose to come home a year into his contract after a confluence of events necessitated his return.

Former Melbourne Victory defender Nick Ansell has signed with Portuguese top-flight club CD Tondela.

The Australian departed the A-League grand finalists at the season's end to seek opportunities overseas after seven years at the club.

He played 19 games last season but was on the bench in the Grand Final loss to Sydney FC, behind preferred central defenders Alan Baro and James Donachie.
