David Carney eyes second title 11 years after inaugural A-League championship

Eleven years, eight clubs and six countries after winning his first A-League title with Sydney FC, David Carney is on the verge of a second.

Carney had only just made his Socceroos debut when the then 22-year-old started the inaugural Grand Final in 2006, a 1-0 win over Central Coast at Allianz Stadium.

Now 33 and in the twilight of his career, the veteran utility will sit on the bench at the same venue for Sunday's A-League season-decider, when Graham Arnold's Sky Blues take on Melbourne Victory.

Carney backs Arnold to find defensive reinforcements in the transfer market

David Carney has admitted that Graham Arnold needs to do something to tackle Sydney FC's shrunken defensive stocks.

Western Sydney head into Saturday's derby with the runaway A-League leader's defence vulnerable after the departure of central defender Matt Jurman and an injury to stand-in skipper Seb Ryall.

Midfielder Josh Brillante, who helped out in the Sky Blues' backline when Ryall limped off with a hamstring injury in the 3-2 win over Central Coast on Sunday, will also miss through suspension.

FFA to implement video replays before A-League finals

The A-League is set to implement video replays before the finals series starts, meaning contentious incidents like David Carney's handball goal will no longer be missed.

Head of the A-League Greg O'Rourke has revealed Football Federation Australia's (FFA) leading referees and video assistant referees (VARs) spent the weekend before last conducting tests of Hawkeye technology at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

It came after FFA's director of referees Ben Wilson travelled to Zurich late last month for...

Sydney FC's David Carney ready to face former club Newcastle Jets

David Carney is admittedly unsure what type of reception awaits him in Newcastle.

It's been nearly nine months since Sydney FC's veteran winger wrapped up an eventful A-League stint with the Newcastle Jets in the Hunter.

Within two years there, Carney was everything from returned Socceroos star, to club outcast late in Nathan Tinkler's turbulent reign and, finally, reawakened fan favourite under former coach Scott Miller.

Now he's excited to be heading back there for Saturday's clash between two...

Adelaide leapfrog Brisbane, late Sydney goal breaks Melbourne hearts

Bruce Kambau builds on his ever growing reputation, scoring and assisting again in their 3-0 win over Brisbane.

Adelaide United leapfrogged Brisbane Roar into second place with a 3-0 win over their title rivals on Saturday, while a late equaliser for Sydney FC broke Melbourne Victory hearts as they remain neck and neck in the A-League table.

Emerging star Bruce Kamau struck again for Adelaide, finding the back of the net with a crisp first-time strike in the 38th minute, following some slick build up play by his teammates Stefan Mauk and Sergio Cirio.

Kenyan-born Kamau was also a pivotal...

Melbourne derby headlines A-League as Western Sydney pay price for fans

On-field intrigue has again paired with off-field drama in the A-League this week. Here are five things to watch out for in what promises to be a dramatic round 19:

1. More than just pride on the line

There is no doubt the Melbourne derby has developed into one of the most eagerly anticipated battles on the A-League calendar, and this week's latest instalment is no exception.

That Socceroo defender Alex Wilkinson has recently opted to sign for Melbourne City over Melbourne Victory and will likely...
