Liga MX draft analysis: Rodolfo Pizarro, Omar Gonzalez starting fresh

This summer's Liga MX draft ultimately proved to be far more quiet than usual. Lost in the media frenzy surrounding the Mexican national team, Wednesday's event in Cancun was largely overlooked. The fact that only 55 transactions were made didn't exactly help either.

Nevertheless, there was no lack of intriguing and noteworthy moves that were either made or confirmed. While a squad such as Cruz Azul had already signed a number of key players before Wednesday, countless others were left chasing...

Carlos Pena joins Necaxa on loan from Rangers as Cruz Azul spell cut short

Carlos Pena failed to score in 10 appearances for Cruz Azul.

Carlos Pena has joined Necaxa on loan after fellow Mexican club Cruz Azul ended his year-long move from Rangers six months early.

Pena, 28, will play for Necaxa for the remainder of his loan time after Pedro Caixinha, his former manager at Rangers, cut his spell at Cruz Azul short.

Necaxa posted confirmation of the transfer on Twitter, writing: "Welcome, @G27Gullit To defend these colours," while Cruz Azul tweeted to thank him for his service.

Pena's move comes after ESPN Mexico reported that...

The biggest challenges facing Mexico's Europeos ahead of the 2017-18 season

Much like rest of the world, Herculez Gomez and Sebastian Salazar are split over Juan Carlos Osorio's future with Mexico.

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio laid down a challenge to his players after the Confederations Cup in Russia earlier this summer. The Colombian told each one of his 23-man squad to do everything possible to play at least 10 "high-level" games in the year leading up to the World Cup.

At least in the manner Osorio told the press about the challenge, it was a slightly ambiguous. What constitutes a "high-level" game, anyway? But the underlying message wasn't complicated: Mexico needs its players...

Mexico Hot List: Rodolfo Pizarro emerges as game-changer for Chivas

Rodolfo Pizarro will likely earn another chance to shine for Mexico next month.

Although a spot in the next World Cup has yet to be clinched by Mexico's national team, it wouldn't be surprising if manager Juan Carlos Osorio is already narrowing down his roster considerations. While certain names such as Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Hector Moreno already seem to have a place in Russia 2018 guaranteed, countless others are battling to gain recognition.

Keeping in mind that the next World Cup qualifiers are set for early September, here are the latest best and worst performances...

Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha eager to help Carlos Pena recover his old form

Carlos Pena was the heart of Leon's attack in their back-to-back championships, and now will look for more success in Guadalajara.
Carlos 'Gullit' Pena was once one of the best players in Mexico, says Pedro Caixinha.

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha says he hopes to help new signing Carlos "Gullit" Pena recover the form that once made him among "the best in Mexico."

The Scottish club officially unveiled Pena and Eduardo Herrera as their seventh and eighth signings of the summer on Thursday, and Caixinha, who formerly coached Liga MX club Santos Laguna, told ESPN's "Toque Inicial" that he had long had his eye on the Mexico internationals.

"Since I arrived in Mexico in 2012, I first met Carlos, who at...
