Boro can take positive step forward by putting a dent in Liverpool's future

When Martin Atkinson puts the whistle to his lips for the final time this season on Sunday, there will be few Middlesbrough fans sorry to see the curtains fall on their Premier League campaign. With just a paltry five wins and 27 goals to show for their 37 game in the top flight so far, the thoughts of the faithful have long since moved on to how a promotion push can be mounted next term.

Developments at the brighter end of the table, however, have offered Boro a final chance to make an impact....

Already-relegated 'Boro have nothing to lose, need to show attacking intent

With Middlesbrough's immediate relegation to the Sky Bet Championship confirmed after their 3-0 drubbing to champions-elect Chelsea, thoughts within the club will be turning to just how it all went so wrong and ultimately how it can be put right.

Steve Agnew will somehow need to find a way to lift the battered spirits of his players as he aims to see out what remains of Boro's short Premier League tenure with dignity. Southampton, comfortably nestled in 10th position, are the final visitors...

Middlesbrough earn impressive draw with Man City but deserved more

Middlesbrough impressed with a hard-working and positive performance that will have ticked all of caretaker manager Steve Agnew's boxes Sunday. Although relegation still looks almost certain for the Teessiders, Sunday's showing was far from the negative and uninspired displays at home under Aitor Karanka. Boro went all-out today, contained a high-quality Manchester City side well and were unlucky to not come away with all three points.

All of the heart and soul that Boro fans thrive on...

Taking a chance on Adama Traore doesn't pay off for Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough found themselves on the wrong side of a couple of key moments as they went down 2-1 at the Riverside to Arsenal.

With a draw not being of use to either side and with the game delicately poised at 1-1, Steve Agnew took a chance and substituted on the frustrating starlet Adama Traore to give Boro some presence in the final third. But it backfired, as the pacy winger lost possession in a key area, leading to Mesut Ozil's winning goal.

Now six points adrift of safety with six games...

Middlesbrough get chance to extend struggling Arsenal's woes

Arsenal head to the Riverside Stadium a week after a very difficult night in South London, where they fell 3-0 to relegation contenders Crystal Palace. Monday evening's fixture will be interesting to many, given it's a meeting of two sides under intense pressure at different ends of the league table.

Latent caretaker manager Steve Agnew has collected two points from four games since he took over from Aitor Karanka. While many fans thought that the agreement for Karanka to part ways with 'Boro...

Defence stays strong but Gestede's miss will haunt Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough aimlessly slid further into the relegation mire as they held on meekly for a goalless draw away at Swansea. Boro repelled wave upon wave of Swansea pressure but were unable to build on that foundation with any form of attacking fervour. Having spent the vast majority of the final quarter of the game without the ball, Rudy Gestede looked set to seal the points for the visitors but his header flashed wide. A glaring miss, after so much defensive work, is Boro's season in microcosm.
