Philadelphia Union sign forward CJ Sapong to new contract

The Philadelphia Union have signed forward CJ Sapong to a new deal, the club announced on Wednesday.

Though terms of the contract have not been revealed, Sapong, 29, is set to receive a raise on the $300,000 he made last season and will now stay at the club through 2019, with Philadelphia retaining an option for the 2020 season.

"We are pleased to complete this agreement with CJ, a critical part of the spine of our team," sporting director Earnie Stewart said. "He fits perfectly in our system with his nose for goal and his hold-up play.

"We'd like to thank him for his hard work and commitment to the Philadelphia Union and we look forward to working with him for years to come."

Sapong has provided a goal and an assist for the Union thus far this season, and has scored 55 goals in MLS play between the regular season and playoffs in his career.

A United States international, Sapong has been capped four times for his country.

In addition to Philly, he has also played for Orlando City and Sporting Kansas City since joining the league in 2011.
