PSG lacked experience and maturity in UCL loss to Real - Marquinhos

PARIS -- Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos believes that the French capital outfit need greater experience and maturity after a 2-1 defeat at home to Real Madrid on Tuesday confirmed a Champions League exit at the round-of-16 stage for the second consecutive season.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro were enough for Zinedine Zidane's men to complete a 5-2 aggregate win at Parc des Princes and Edinson Cavani's short-lived equaliser was the scantest of consolation goals.

Speaking after the final whistle, Marquinhos did not hold back in his assessment of his and his teammates' shortcomings.

"We are very frustrated with being eliminated from a major competition," said the Brazil international, who recovered from a thigh injury to play. "These two matches showed that we still have some way to go.

"We played against a side that is used to winning thanks to the little details and we paid for that over these two matches.

"We know that the Champions League is a very demanding competition, and before winning it, you have to go through this. We need more time before we are ready for these types of matches."

Marquinhos' injured countryman Neymar, who missed out after undergoing foot surgery last week, took to Twitter to congratulate his PSG teammates following the match.

The Brazilian wrote in part: "I'm sad for the loss, even sadder for not being on the field helping my teammates!! It made me proud to see everyone's effort."

Midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who played a part in Real's second goal through Casemiro with a failed clearance, felt that the tie was lost in Spain during the first leg at Santiago Bernabeu and not in the return.

"I think we can regret what happened in the first match, in Madrid," the France international said. "We controlled the first half, but we lacked the goal we needed to make them doubt a little bit.

"In the second half, playing 10 against 11, against a team like Real, it was impossible. In my opinion, we lost this tie at Santiago Bernabeu.

"We tried to give it everything, but at the end of the night, the entire club is disappointed. For the moment, we cannot get past the last 16, but that will change at one time or another, I am sure of that."
