PSG coach Unai Emery: 'I will not single out one player' for Barcelona loss

Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery insists he will not single out one player for the humiliating Champions League 6-1 defeat in Barcelona on Wednesday.

The French giants were on the receiving end of a thrashing at Camp Nou, which completed a brutal 6-5 aggregate loss, and Thiago Silva's role as captain immediately put him at the head of the firing line for criticism.

But, speaking in his prematch news conference ahead of FC Lorient away in Ligue 1 on Sunday, Emery showed solidarity towards the Brazil international and pointed to the collective responsibility.

"I will not single out one player ahead of the rest of the team when we win and even less when we lose," the Spaniard told journalists at Camp des Loges. "We are together, the same team and the same squad.

"A lack of characters, of leaders? A celebrated coach, who I spoke with after the Barcelona defeat, told me that Barcelona are used to handling tough moments like that. We must learn from this.

"PSG remain a big club with a significant project but we must learn from our negative experiences. This moment will prove useful in the future. It was not our character that failed us. We are going to learn for the future, that is our objective now.

Emery went on to reveal he has "spoken with the president [chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi] already" and feels "PSG deserve greater respect within Europe."

The Basque coach then admitted he has since watched the Barcelona defeat back and expressed his optimism that PSG can rebound.

"I have comprehensively analysed the Barcelona match," said Emery. "There are two faces to football. It was an experience. We cannot control everything, such as the referee's decisions. In the second half, we played for 40 minutes that would have qualified us. However, certain decisions eliminated us.

"We will be better prepared for the Champions League next season. You learn a lot during the bad times. The project will continue. I believe in these players, the staff and the president. When you accept the supporters' delight after our win in Marseille, you must also accept their anger here."

Emery also confirmed that PSG will be without the injured Thiago Motta away at Lorient this weekend, while Marco Verratti is suspended and Lucas Moura and Blaise Matuidi are not physically ready to play again yet.

"Thiago will continue to work on his calf with the fitness staff," the former Sevilla boss said. "Marco is suspended. Lucas and Blaise will not be ready in time. We have picked a squad of 19 players."
