Thiago Motta: Paris Saint-Germain on track for another brilliant season

Thiago Motta is convinced Paris Saint-Germain can put a mixed start behind them and make this another season to savour.

The midfielder played a busy role in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Bordeaux at the Parc des Princes. In the end, two goals from Edinson Cavani did the damage as the French champions for each of the last four seasons rolled to a fifth win in eight Ligue 1 games this term.

The summer departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Manchester United inevitably weakened PSG, and a change of head coach saw Laurent Blanc replaced by Unai Emery. But the side from the French capital are exploring measures to become less reliant on such a star player as Ibrahimovic and be more robust as a team.

Motta underlined it will need a "united" push to drive PSG on this season, which has already seen them suffer league losses to Monaco and Toulouse. In the whole of the 2015-16 league campaign, they lost just twice and finished 31 points clear of their nearest, though distant, rivals Lyon and Monaco.

Italian Motta told Canal Plus the display against Bordeaux was a step in the right direction.

He said: "We're happy with our performance, especially in the first half. We're in the process of building something solid. We shouldn't compare this to last season.

"We're writing a new story and we have to show that by continuing to win, which is the most difficult thing to do in football.

"We're going to try to achieve all our objectives this season. For a few matches now we've found the right formula, and we have to remain united to move forward. We've shown today that we can do great things together."

He added, according to PSG's website: "We need our fans, we've celebrated this victory with them at the end of the match. We're playing for them too and the fans should take pleasure from coming here.

"I feel that here, in this club, we can do great things again this season."
