Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Christopher Nkunku signs new deal

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed midfielder Christopher Nkunku has renewed his contract with the French champions until 2020 and the player has called it a "great sign of confidence" from the capital club.

Nkunku, 18, is a France under-20 international and featured five times -- four of those starts -- in Ligue 1 alone last season, while also appearing in the final UEFA Champions League group match against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The youth academy graduate is rated highly at Parc des Princes and made his breakthrough under former coach Laurent Blanc. Although he has not featured too much under new boss Unai Emery, he has obviously impressed enough to earn a two-year extension.

"This is a great sign of confidence from the club," Nkunku told PSG's official website. "I have worked very hard to get to where I am and this new contract will push me on even further, to keep improving here, at PSG.

"I have always been a PSG supporter, I am a Parisian through and through. I came through the youth ranks here. Now, I want to make a place for myself at this club and I will do everything I can to make it happen."

Nkunku, who comes from the Parisian suburb of Lagny-sur-Marne, played a key role in the PSG U19 side's run to last term's UEFA Youth League final.

Les Parisiens' decision to hand Nkunku a new contract illustrates the Ligue 1 giants' recent improvement at signing their best young talents to professional contracts and then keeping them in Paris to avoid a repeat of the situation that saw Kingsley Coman join Juventus for free back in 2014.
