Unai Emery: PSG wanted second striker to compete with Edinson Cavani

Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery confirmed the French champions wished to sign another striker this summer to compete with Edinson Cavani but the Uruguay international's fragile confidence made moves difficult.

The Spaniard admitted another reputable pure goal scorer to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic and vie with El Matador for the main striking role would have "complicated things" but stated his belief Cavani can get back to his prolific best.

"It is vital to give Cavani confidence," Emery told Christophe Dugarry's "Team Duga" show on RMC radio. "Signing a big name to compete with him would have complicated things. Jese can play in attack, he is versatile and Augustin is young and ready to grow.

"I have no doubts about Cavani," Emery added. "I go shopping for lots of confidence in the supermarket every day and then I give it to the players."

"Cavani is rushing things a bit and I have told him to relax. 29 is a good age for a striker and I have asked him to create chances. He has done that and the goals will follow."

Asked whether France international Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid was a player PSG targeted to compete with Cavani, Emery revealed he is an admirer of the player.

"Since I arrived here, lots of big names have been thrown around," Emery said. "The most important are the players who are here though."

"I know Griezmann well but I have never spoken with him. He is a very good player. Five years ago, I was Valencia coach and I asked my president to sign him from Real Sociedad. It did not happen and today he says he is happy with Atletico."

Blaise Matuidi looked likely to leave Parc des Princes this summer but PSG ultimately blocked a Juventus move, something which disappointed the France international. Emery, though, is satisfied he is staying.

"Who is the best at applying pressure to recover the ball? It is Matuidi," the Basque tactician said. "He returned to training later than the others. We are strong but with competition, the squad is stronger. There will be injuries during the season."

"Matuidi staying was important, I told him three times. He also told me he was happy to stay."

Unlike Matuidi, David Luiz was granted a move away from Paris on transfer deadline day and Emery revealed that he did not want the Brazil international to leave.

"It was the same thing as with Matuidi," Emery said. "I spoke a lot with him and with the team. After the Monaco match, he told us he had a good offer from Chelsea and wanted to leave. I told him he was important and I wanted him to stay."

"But if he was not happy and thinks it is better to leave, then I respect that. That is what I told the club. We then decided it was too late to sign someone and better to wait until the winter."
