Verratti, Pastore star in talented PSG 23-man Champions League squad

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed their 23-man UEFA Champions League squad for the group phase and there were no major surprises from coach Unai Emery.

The French titleholders will face Arsenal, Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad in Group A and are expected to advance comfortably in one of the top-two positions.

Despite a number of summer departures, the capital club still boast plenty of talent across the board and notably in midfield, with Marco Verratti, Angel Di Maria and Javier Pastore among the big names on the list.

In goal, Emery can call upon youth academy graduate and current France squad member Alphonse Areola, regular Ligue 1 starter Kevin Trapp or promising young shot stopper Remy Descamps.

As far as defence is concerned, the Spaniard has two players for every position except for centre-backs.

Captain Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and home-grown talent Presnel Kimpembe make up the options in the middle, while Serge Aurier and Thomas Meunier are the right-backs and Layvin Kurzawa and Maxwell the left-sided possibilities.

Moving into midfield, where Emery possesses an embarrassment of riches. Verratti, Di Maria and Pastore all feature and Grzegorz Krychowiak, Lucas Moura, Thiago Motta and Blaise Matuidi join them, as well as youth academy starlets Adrien Rabiot and Christopher Nkunku.

In attack, the Basque tactician will be relying mostly upon Edinson Cavani for goals and the Uruguay international is complemented by Hatem Ben Arfa, Jese Rodriguez and home grown gem Jean-Kevin Augustin.

The four reserves are highly rated young right back Alec Georgen, promising midfielder Lorenzo Callegari, exciting wide man Jonathan Ikone and almost forgotten attacker Hervin Ongenda -- who has barely featured under Emery so far.

The only semi-surprise in PSG's squad is that Nkunku was favoured over Callegari, a player Emery has taken a particular shine to since arriving in Paris. Both were deserving of inclusion and only missed out because of the fierce competition for places in that position.

Nkunku's greater experience, despite both players still only being 18 years old, likely swung the vote narrowly in his favour. However, if David Luiz had remained at Parc des Princes, Nkunku would probably also occupy a reserve berth.

It is possible for PSG to add to this list but only once they reach the latter stages, assuming they do. So, if Les Parisiens move for Sao Paulo defender Rodrigo Caio in January as expected, he could be registered in time for the knockout rounds.
