Kevin Trapp welcomes Paris Saint-Germain keeper competition

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Kevin Trapp says he welcomes the competition for the No. 1 spot at the club, telling ESPN FC: "In teams like this, it is necessary to have that."

Trapp, 26, established himself as Laurent Blanc's first-choice keeper ahead of Salvatore Sirigu following his move from Eintracht Frankfurt last year.

This season, new coach Unai Emery also has 23-year-old Alphonse Areola as an option after he returned from a season-long loan spell at Villarreal.

Asked about the increased competition, Trapp told ESPN FC after the 3-1 International Champions Cup win over Real Madrid: "For the press, it is always great to have something to write about!

"We understand each other well, we work together every day. Of course there is great competition. We even have Salvatore when we get back to Paris, so with the three of us and Remy [Descamps] there is great competition.

"There is strong competition in almost every position and in teams like this, it is necessary to have that. Everybody wants to show their best and then it is up to the coach to decide."

He also welcomed the arrival of former Sevilla boss Emery, saying: "We are speaking a lot and training a lot.

"He is a very good coach, who speaks a lot and I think that this is important for us. One of the most important things is that we understand what he is asking us to do and he is very clear in what he wants from us, so that is a big positive. We still have to improve on a few things but, so far, it has not been bad."

The victory over Real Madrid followed on from Sunday's 3-1 International Champions Cup win over Inter Milan, and Trapp is upbeat about the French champions' prospects for the coming season.

"Two matches, two victories, so it is already not a bad showing," he said. "We have been working hard and we are starting to show what we do in practice in our matches. It is not perfect yet but we are improving every day and showing more and more of what we are capable of.

"Two wins against teams like Inter Milan and Real Madrid is not bad and I think it has been good for our confidence."
