PSG's Marco Verratti undergoes surgery to repair groin injury

Paris Saint-Germain and Italy midfielder Marco Verratti has undergone a "successful" operation on his persistent groin problem.

PSG announced earlier in the month that Verratti was set for surgery after an injury-hit season and would miss this summer's European Championship.

The operation took place in Doha on Monday and the club were satisfied with the outcome.

"As previously announced by the club, Marco Verratti underwent surgery on Monday 16 May, at the Aspetar Hospital in Doha," a statement on PSG's official website read.

"Operated on by the experts at the Sport Groin Pain Center, Doctors Ulrike Muschaweck, Gilles Reboul and Zarko Vuckovic, the operation was a success.

"Paris St Germain wish Marco a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back to his best for both club and country."

The 23-year-old, who in February signed a contract extension until 2020, is expected to require around two months' rehabilitation so will hope to rejoin PSG's first-team squad in time for the new Ligue 1 season.
