Thiago Silva: Serge Aurier has developed a lot at PSG

Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva led the tributes to Serge Aurier after the full-back's impressive Champions League debut helped them to victory against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Aurier, 22, scored a towering header after seven minutes to give the French champions the lead in Ukraine and he played a part in the second goal scored by David Luiz as well.

The marauding right-back also did a good job defensively in the 3-0 win that sees PSG sit with six points from two matches in Group A.

Wednesday's success has set PSG up perfectly for a crunch clash with Real Madrid in Paris on Oct. 21 and Brazilian centre-back Silva, 31, was quick to praise Aurier's contribution.

"Physically he's very strong and technically I think he's developed a lot this year," Silva told Canal+. "I think Serge and a lot of players in this team have a lot of confidence at the moment and that's why we've had a very good start to the season."

After featuring for the Ivory Coast at the 2014 World Cup, Aurier joined PSG on loan from Toulouse before the club took up an option to sign him on a permanent deal this summer.

On Wednesday, the former Lens player was making his first appearance in the Champions League after serving a three-match ban for criticising the refereeing during PSG's clash with Chelsea in last year's competition.

PSG boss Laurent Blanc said that Aurier's performance had helped the whole back four to perform well.

"We wanted to get this player last year because we thought correctly... that he had the potential to really impose himself at Paris Saint-Germain," Blanc told a news conference.

Aurier's goal against Shakhtar was his third of the season and the Ivorian said he was relieved to finally get some European experience under his belt.

"Before the match, I was a little bit apprehensive," he told Canal+. "But now I'm really happy. It was my first game [in the competition] so I really wanted to feel good and that's what happened.

"I didn't put myself under too much pressure because I have top-class teammates who knew it was my debut did everything to help me settle in."
