Laurent Blanc: PSG may sacrifice cups for Champions League success

Paris Saint-Germain manager Laurent Blanc has said he might sacrifice one of the domestic cup competitions in order to focus on the Champions League.

PSG won a clean sweep of domestic trophies last season, but Blanc has made no secret of his and the club's desire to win the Champions League as soon as possible.

The French champions were missing several key players when they lost to Barcelona in last season's quarterfinals.

And former France boss Blanc believes keeping key members of the squad fit for the latter stages of the competition is vital.

"There's no blueprint that gives you the guarantee of going a long way in the Champions League," he said when asked whether mirroring Bayern Munich and wrapping up the league title as quickly as possible was an aim.

"Bayern were champions of Germany after I don't remember how few games. They were able to focus on the Champions League -- but they didn't win it.

"I think what's important is to try to have your key players available in April and May."

Blanc added that he might protect his squad further by not worrying too much about either the Coupe de France or the Coupe de la Ligue.

"We're going to try and control some things in terms of training, in terms of the workload and in terms of rotation for matches because there will be a lot of them," he said.

"Have you seen the calendar for the national cup competitions? It's catastrophic for the Champions League. So we might let one of the two [cups] go."
