PSG's Zlatan Ibrahimovic sets sights on Champions League

Zlatan Ibrahimovic wants Paris Saint-Germain to improve on last season's historic achievements in the coming campaign, with European success a top priority.

Ibrahimovic, 33, was part of the PSG squad that won an unprecedented domestic quadruple last season, but they were eliminated from the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage by eventual winners Barcelona.

Following the signing of Angel Di Maria, in addition to the acquisition of German goalkeeper Kevin Trapp and midfielder Benjamin Stambouli, the former AC Milan forward believes PSG are stronger than last season and is optimistic more success will follow soon.

"My ambition is to do better than last year. I think it will be a fantastic season," the Sweden international told Bleacher Report. "The team is growing.

"The team is getting stronger, bigger. The club's ambition is to win even more than last year, if that's possible. Only one trophy is missing, that's the Champions League, so hopefully we can do much better than we have in previous seasons."

PSG have fallen at the last-eight hurdle in the competition in each of the last three seasons, losing twice to Barca and once to Chelsea.

Ibrahimovic's own contribution to those ties was limited by injury and suspension. Having famously never won the Champions League, the ex-Juventus, Inter Milan and Barca striker feels PSG offer him a realistic chance of finally getting his hands on the elusive trophy.

"For me, the Champions League is about the small details," he said. "The small details make the difference. With a little bit of luck to be as strong as possible at the right moment, we probably can make it.

"We have a team that gives us the possibility of going all the way. It's not easy, but we'll be there, and we'll give all the other teams a hard time, that's for sure."

The current campaign could be Ibrahimovic's last at PSG as his contract with the Ligue 1 champions expires in June, and it could well be the last in which he plays in Europe.

He has been strongly linked with a move to Major League Soccer, and he said he would welcome the opportunity to play on the other side of the Atlantic, joining other stars such as Andrea Pirlo, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, David Villa and Kaka in the United States.

"You never know," Ibrahimovic said. "I see Zlatan playing in the U.S., but when? I don't know.

"It's growing in the right way. It's getting bigger and bigger, and you see more and more players on a higher level going there. I think players in Europe are getting more curious about Major League Soccer. I'm happy for the U.S., because I think the U.S. needs soccer to be at the same level as in Europe as it could do great things."
