Marquinhos gets one-year contract extension from Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos has a signed a one-year extension that will tie him to the Ligue 1 club until the end of the 2018-19 season.

The Brazilian centre-back has scored six goals in 63 appearances since joining PSG from Roma in the summer of 2013.

"Marquinhos represents the future of our club and this extension shows how strongly attached he is to Paris Saint-Germain," PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi said in a club statement.

"We are very happy to extend our adventure with this young and talented player, and it shows how committed the Club is to conserving our best young talents.

The 20-year-old has been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea in recent transfer windows.

"The biggest European clubs were interested in signing Marquinhos, so this contract extension further reinforces Paris Saint-Germain's ambitious long-term project." Al Khelaifi said.

Marquinhos said he is happy at PSG, who are fighting to retain their domestic title with a one-point lead atop the Ligue 1 table.

"It's great, very good news," the defender said. "It shows that I'm doing a good job. I'm very happy that the Club is showing such confidence in me. It's a new stage of my life. The project here in Paris is magnificent... and life in Paris is wonderful!

"I'm very happy with everything that's happened in my life since signing here. Paris Saint-Germain has provided so much for me. I hope it continues for a long time to come."
