Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani has defended his disappointing showing against Barcelona by stressing how much commitment is required to succeed against the Spanish team.

The French press picked out a flat display by Cavani, 27, as the one negative from PSG's dramatic 3-2 Champions League win in Paris on Tuesday.

The Uruguay international, who is often asked to play on the wing, has failed to score in his last three matches despite lining out in his favoured position.

"I feel good playing as a No.9," he told L'Equipe after the 3-2 victory over Barcelona. "I would have liked to score, of course, but that's football.

"Against this Barca team, everyone has to run and to press them to give a hand in defence.

"After that, when you get to attack, you have a little less strength."

Former France midfielder Reynald Pedros, now a pundit with Canal+, told L'Equipe that Cavani cannot be compared to PSG's star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"Ibra manages to score all by himself," he said. "Cavani needs others. But there aren't enough players to give him good service."

Former PSG and Manchester City midfielder Ali Bernabia feels that the former Napoli attacker is suffering from Ibrahimovic's absence through injury.

"Cavani really feels good when Ibrahimovic is there," Bernabia told RMC. "When Ibra is on the pitch, he's the one who gives him good passes and provides assists.

"At the moment, he finds himself in a role where he has to be the main striker and the person who has to create space.

"And you could see from his shooting that he's drawing on his resources a bit too much in that area."

Former France international Jean-Michel Larque also defended Cavani, who PSG signed for 64 million euros last year.

"Nobody could say that he's not a generous guy," the RMC pundit said. "He's everywhere and when he has to defend, he defends. But it's not what we're expecting of him."
