PSG receive suspended deduction

Paris Saint-Germain will start the defence of their Ligue 1 title with a suspended three-point deduction as a result of their former sporting director’s altercation with a referee last season.

Leonardo has maintained his innocence over the incident
Leonard left PSG following the signing of Edinson Cavani.

The French Football League’s Disciplinary Commission initially imposed the sanction after Leonardo was found guilty of shoulder-charging Alexandre Castro following PSG’s draw with Valenciennes on May 5.

Earlier this month a French Football Federation superior appeals commission extended the Brazilian’s nine-month ban by five months but asked the league to make a definitive ruling on the points deduction.

On Thursday evening the league’s disciplinary commission confirmed the punishment, following a hearing during which a lawyer for PSG argued that a points deduction would be unfair.

The points deduction will only come into effect if a club official makes a similar transgression this season.

In the wake of the ruling, PSG announced that Leonardo would depart the club at the close of the transfer window on September 2.

Instead he left his role earlier this month, after the French champions completed the signing of Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani
