Palermo chief Maurizio Zamparini hands Giuseppe Iachini backing

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini has handed coach Giuseppe Iachini a vote of confidence despite his team's winless start to the campaign.

The Sicilian side were eliminated from the Coppa Italia last month after a 3-0 defeat to Modena and were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Sampdoria in their Serie A opener, before losing 2-0 on Monday evening at Hellas Verona.

Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported in Tuesday's edition that Iachini could be on his way out, with former Regina manager Giuseppe Atzori ready to replace him.

However, Zamparini has vehemently denied those rumours and, in a statement on the club's official website, he said: "An important national sports newspaper has this headline today: 'Iachini under fire, Atzori ready to replace him.'

"This information is stupid and vicious.''

The 50-year-old Iachini joined Palermo last summer and led the Rosaneri to be crowned Serie B champions five games before the end of the 2013-14 campaign.

Palermo host Inter Milan on Sunday evening.
