Patrick Kluivert in frame to become new boss of League One Oxford - sources

Patrick Kluivert is wanted by Oxford United, sources have told ESPN FC.

Patrick Kluivert has emerged as a shock candidate for the manager's job at Oxford United, sources close to the League One club have told ESPN FC.

Everton Under-23s boss David Unsworth and former Wales international Craig Bellamy have been linked with the vacancy, but the sources said Oxford owner Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth was looking further afield.

Thanakarnjanasuth is keen to make a high-profile appointment at the Kassam Stadium and has sounded out former Barcelona and Netherlands star Kluivert.

Kluivert, 41, served as assistant to Louis van Gaal and helped Netherlands finish third at the 2014 World Cup.

He then had a short spell in charge of the Curacao national team before working with the youth sided at his former club Ajax and then spending a spell as director of football at Paris Saint-Germain.

Oxford are 16th in League One, five points clear of the relegation zone, and it remains to be seen whether Kluivert would be interested in taking over a side that could yet go down to the fourth tier.
