Joaquin Caparros named new coach of La Liga strugglers Osasuna

Joaquin Caparros has been appointed as the new manager of Osasuna less than 24 hours after predecessor Enrique Martin left his post.

Martin left the El Sadar with Osasuna on seven points from 11 La Liga matches, three points shy of safety, and former Sevilla, Deportivo La Coruna and Athletic Bilbao boss Caparros has been chosen as the man to guide them away from relegation.

"Osasuna has reached an agreement with coach Joaquin Caparros until 30 June 2018," a club statement read.

The 61-year-old's first competitive match in charge of Los Rojillos will come at fellow strugglers Leganes on November 21 as he returns to work for the first time since leaving Granada in January 2015.

The 2015-16 season was the first campaign in 14 years that Caparros did not manage in the Spanish top fight and he was heavily linked with the Spain vacancy in the summer.

Despite Osasuna's poor start to the season, Caparros sees plenty of positives about the players that will be at his disposal and the Pamplona-based club in general.

He told a news conference: "I'm really looking forward to coaching Osasuna, a club with a special DNA.

"The big mistake of our football was to sell the clubs. That the members are owners of our club is very important. This makes Osasuna a different club. You cannot change the DNA of Osasuna."

He added of the Osasuna team: "I've analysed the squad and there's a lot of talent. They are guys who care, who identify with the team, who have an objective and who are grateful to their club. Those values aren't prevalent in football. That is a very strong point of coming to Osasuna, which is one of the exceptions. From that base we have to cement our objectives.

"I've enjoyed coming here with other teams. I have family here and cousins who are Osasuna fans and I know how they feel."

Osasuna first game back after the international break is away to fellow strugglers Leganes, before Caparros' opening home LaLiga match in charge sees Atletico Madrid visit El Sadar.
