Osasuna sack Enrique Martin with club second from bottom

Osasuna have sacked coach Enrique Martin with the club second from bottom in La Liga.

Saturday's home defeat to Alaves left Osasuna on seven points from 11 matches, three points shy of 17th-placed Leganes.

"After the meeting this afternoon of the board and the sporting management of Osasuna, the club has decided to relieve from office the coach Enrique Martin," a club statement said.

"After analysing the sporting situation of the team, the club has identified the need to make this decision with the aim of reversing the current dynamics."

The 60-year-old Martin has a long connection with Osasuna as a player and a manager.

The former forward made over 250 appearances for the club between 1977 and 1988, and was in his third spell in charge of the first team, having also held the role of Osasuna B coach and youth team coach on multiple occasions.

His latest spell with the first team began in May 2015 and, after saving them from relegation from the Segunda Division, he was able to lead them into the top flight following a sixth-placed finish and success in the play-offs.

The club statement added: "Osasuna would like to thank the effort and dedication of Enrique Martin, whose name will go down in history thanks to his brilliant contribution as a player and coach. The club wishes you the best of luck in your future professional challenges."
