Orlando City are in talks with Kaka to return for a fourth season with the club in 2018, says CEO Alex Leitao, who also confirmed Jason Kreis will return after a difficult season.

Kaka, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2007, is the highest-paid player in MLS at over $7 million a year, though his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

But Leitao told the Orlando Sentinel that the 35-year-old wants to continue his career in 2018.

"Yeah, he talked to me and expressed his desire to play another year," Leitao said. "We gave him an offer and now he's with his family... I think he's thinking about the offer we gave him and we're just waiting for a response. So, we're in negotiations."

Leitao said talks thus far have been informal, suggesting the club would welcome him back at the right price.

"So, more about, 'Hey man, this is it, you have to understand. OK, let me think about it and get back to you.' This is how we do things," Leitao said. "At the end of the day, it has to be good for him and for the club to stay. If it's not going to be good for one of the parties, it's not going to happen and we'll both understand.

"It's a friendship, and a guy that I respect a lot. So, I'll always be cheering for him and wishing him the best. Again, he has to look for his interests and I have to look for the interests of the club. Hopefully, both interests are aligned. That would be great."

Kaka has six goals and five assists in 22 appearances this season for Orlando, who appear unlikely to qualify for the MLS playoffs.

The Lions are four points back of the New York Red Bulls for the Eastern Conference's sixth and final playoff spot with two games remaining, asked whether Kreis would return next season, Leitao told the Sentinel: "100 percent."
