Paulo Bento named Olympiakos boss after Victor Sanchez dismissal

Most experts predict that Paulo Bento's Portugal team will be bidding adieu to Brazil following Thursday's group stage finale versus Ghana.
Paulo Bento spent four years in charge of the Portuguese national team.

Olympiakos have named former Portugal coach Paulo Bento as their new manager.

Bento, 47, replaces Victor Sanchez, who was sacked by the Greek champions on Tuesday after less than two months in charge.

Bento, a former Portugal international, began his coaching career at home-town club Sporting Lisbon before taking charge of the national team in 2010 following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.

After four years in the Portugal hotseat, Bento left his post following a shock 1-0 home defeat to Albania in the opening match of their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. That came after a disappointing showing at the 2014 World Cup where Portugal failed to get out of their group.

Bento, who had been in charge of Brazilian side Cruzeiro for a short period earlier this year, becomes Olympiakos' third coach in as many months, with his predecessor Sanchez paying the price for the Greek giants' early exit from the Champions League.

Spaniard Sanchez replaced title-winning boss Marco Silva on June 23, but he was sacked in the wake of Olympiakos' 1-0 aggregate defeat to Hapoel Beer-Sheva in the Champions League third qualifying round.

Olympiakos, who have struggled for wins during preseason, face Arouca in the first leg of their Europa League playoff before beginning the defence of their Super League title against Asteras Tripolis on Aug. 21.
