Ex-Real Madrid legend Raul may reveal new project next month

Former Real Madrid legend Raul said that ending his professional career with an NASL championship was bittersweet.

The 38-year-old, who won six La Liga crowns and three Champions League titles, helped the New York Cosmos beat the Ottawa Fury 3-2 to win the North American Soccer League championship.

"It was my last game in my career," the former Spain striker said about his 21 years as a player. "I'm very proud of everything I did. For me now, I start a new life with another project. I'm happy, but I'm also very sad."

Raul, who announced the decision to retire earlier this year, would not talk about what his plans are for the future, but hinted that by next month he would be making an announcement.

"There will be time to talk about all that," he said, adding that he just wanted to enjoy the moment.

"I'm happy that for 21 years I was able to do something that I love, which is playing football. I couldn't ask for anything more."

Raul left Real Madrid in 2010 after 16 years with the club. He also scored 44 goals in 102 appearances for Spain.

Raul, who also played at Germany's Schalke and Al Sadd in Qatar, was Real's record scorer with 323 goals until last month when Cristiano Ronaldo took over the honour.

"I started playing on a sand lot," Raul said. "I feel like a kid no matter where I play, on the street, the grass or on sand. For me, football is all the same whether on real or artificial turf or with or without fans in the stands."

Raul said he was happy to contribute to the growth of the game in the United States, but added that more must be done to promote the sport.

Raul also said he was proud to finish his career at the Cosmos alongside Marcos Senna, who won Euro 2008 with Spain.
