NASL unveils Rayo OKC as part of league expansion

Oklahoma City is the latest market to join the fast-growing North American Soccer League, the second-tier circuit announced on Tuesday.

Rayo OKC will join fellow newcomers Miami and Puerto Rico as the NASL expands to 14 clubs in 2016.

Rayo OKC, which is co-owned by Spanish La Liga club Rayo Vallecano and local businessman Sean Jones, will debut next spring.

The name, Rayo OKC, directly reflects the Rayo Vallecano partnership as the Madrid club becomes the first La Liga side to invest in a pro soccer club in North America.

"Our launch of Rayo OKC is another groundbreaking addition to the international soccer community," NASL commissioner Bill Peterson said. "The club's unique partnership with Rayo Vallecano de Madrid highlights the global nature of the game and the global vision of the league.

"Rayo OKC will be the first American club able to take advantage of the expertise of La Liga to identify top players and build its roster accordingly."
