NPFL Preview: Akwa United, Enyimba pick of the bunch on matchday 27

Akwa United celebrate a goal during their NPFL match. Colin Udoh

The battle at the top of the league table intensifies on Sunday, as Uyo comes alive with a potentially explosive game between two in-form teams, Akwa United and Enyimba.

Regardless of results, the bottom four should remain unchanged at the end of the weekend.

Akwa United vs Enyimba

Third-place Akwa United hosts fourth-place Enyimba, in what could to produce end-end action in Uyo.

Akwa United, who has a game in hand and are lagging behind Enyimba by a solitary point, boast a superior attack and defence which could be the difference in this game.

Former Enyimba player Christian Pyagbara could have a trick or two up his sleeves against his former teammates, while Mfon Udoh who now captains Enyimba could fancy increasing his ten league goals against the team that gave him the big breakthrough into the top-flight.

El Kanemi Warriors vs Plateau United

Fifth-place El Kanemi Warriors are gradually losing grip of a top four spot. They will look to put spanners in the works of league leaders Plateau United in Maiduguri. Up until four weeks ago, El Kanemi Warriors had won every home game for over a year until they were held to a draw by Enugu Rangers.

They could be further stretched to the limits by a Plateau United side determined not to allow the chasing pack cut their five-points lead at the top.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah vs Katsina United

FC Ifeanyi Ubah have a herculean task if they are to improve on their seventh position on the log, when they take on 13th-place Katsina United.

The Nnewi-based team are without a win in three successive games, netting just a goal in that period.

Lobi Stars vs Enugu Rangers

Sixth-place Lobi Stars, two points behind the last continental spot on the table, hosts a resurgent Enugu Rangers team who are unbeaten in five successive games.

The champions should be wary of the attacking threat posed by the duo of Tony Okpotu and Kingsley Eduwo.

MFM FC vs ABS FC

MFM FC in second can take advantage of any potential slip-up at the top by cutting the lead when they host ABS FC in Lagos.

MFM have enjoyed a winning run on home turf this season, the goalless home draw against Akwa United the sole exception.

League top scorer, Stephen Odey is a favourite to net for a third successive game against 14th-place ABS FC, as he finally looks to have overcome the goal drought which threatened to halt MFM FC'S title bid.

Niger Tornadoes vs Remo Stars

Niger Tornadoes who are tenth on the table could potentially move up the log and tally 40 points for the season, provided they secure a home win against bottom place Remo Stars.

Shooting Stars vs Wikki Tourists

Shooting Stars, occupying the spot above rock bottom welcomes Wikki Tourist who themselves aren't in the most comfortable league position in 15th-place.

Wikki Tourists shocked many when they secured a season's first away point against FC Ifeanyi Ubah on their last away trip. They could look to build on that against a struggling host, in a game of relegation battlers.

Sunshine Stars vs Abia Warriors

Sunshine Stars hosts Abia Warriors on their newly adopted home ground in Ijebu-Ode. Nothing less than a win is required by the home team to ease relegation fears.

Sunshine Stars are on a bad patch of form, winning just once in their last five games.
